Meet Our Matching Donor!
John Burke, a member of UPMC Hillman Cancer Center’s Council, is generously offering a $20,000 match to cancer research at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center this Giving Tuesday. Like so many people, John’s life has been affected by cancer. He recalls doing some research many years ago about the best place to go for treatment and quickly deciding on UPMC Hillman Cancer Center.
“I walked into UPMC Hillman for the first time in 2016, supporting a family member who had developed cancer. And anyone's first visit to a place like that is incredibly unnerving. You just think about all the first times that people walked in there thinking, ‘My goodness, I'm dealing with, or my family member is dealing with cancer,’ and it is incredible trepidation you have,” he said.
“And yet you walk into this incredibly welcoming physical environment filled with empathetic and positive people focused on a culture of caring,” he continued. “It is a remarkable place when you first walk in because it is hard for everybody who does it. And there is such a genuine sense of care for the patients and their families. And I think about that a lot when I think about Hillman.”
John decided to provide a matching gift to honor his friends and family and their respective cancer journeys. He hopes his giving will inspire others to contribute to such an important cause. “For me, this matching gift honors the relationship we all have with cancer; it affects everyone’s life. I think there are very few people who can say that they have not had a loved one or friend experience cancer on some level,” John said. “The nature of being around cancer creates an awareness of making sure you support special places like UPMC Hillman.”
